Match reports for the Senior squad.
2009-10 season
Miles Davey
Egremont met Whitehaven for the second time in a fortnight to decide whether Egremont could achieve a promotion play-off position or whether Whitehaven could complete the league season undefeated.
Egremont had the better of the opening exchanges and when their forwards set up a good position Liam Nicholls was just fractionally wide with a drop goal attempt from 30 metres out.
Egremont had then to withstand Whitehaven pressure from a line-out in their own 22 metre with George Sufola(?) prominent before a Richard Postlethwaite clearing kick sent the ball back into the Whitehaven 22 metre area. Gareth Lewis then seized hold of a loose ball from a set scrum and drove through the last line of defence for a try near the posts which Postlethwaite converted to put Egremont seven points in front.
The next score came out of the blue after a series of Egremont mistakes when they had a clearing kick charged down and the ball fell to Whitehaven`s Steven McCourt who kicked wide to the right wing where two Egremont defenders failed to collect the bouncing ball and Paul Lancaster nipped in to drop on the ball over the line for a Whitehaven try to reduce the deficit.
Egremont then missed with another drop goal attempt but Whitehaven made no mistake when Connell kicked a penalty goal from 15 m. in front of goal to put Whitehaven in the lead.
Egremont still tried to force the pace for the next 10 minutes but they were unable to convert their penalty goal attempts from 25m. and 42m. in front of goal and they were made to pay for these misses when Whitehaven scored an excellent try just before half-time. From a set scrum, Paul Lancaster ran from the right wing to support a Whitehaven passing movement out to the left wing where he scored a try wide out to make the half-time score Egremont 7 Whitehaven 13.
The Egremont forwards were tackling well but they were guilty of trying to drive too many balls close to the fringes instead of feeding quick ball to their backs whilst the Whitehaven forwards were beginning to dominate first phase possession from the line-outs and scrums to keep on the attack with George Sufola and ???????? prominent.
It was 15 minutes before the next score when McConnell kicked a Whitehaven penalty goal from 35 m. out wide on the right. Five minutes later Egremont had a player sin-binned for a high tackle and almost immediately afterwards Whitehaven were awarded a penalty try under the posts for obstruction and McConnell converted to put Whitehaven into a sixteen point lead.
Egremont retaliated bravely with only fourteen men and Nicholls and Postlethwaite combined well for the latter to score an unconverted try out on the left wing.Shortly afterwards, Whitehaven again made use of the extra man to score another try out on the right wing by Lancaster. Finally, when Egremont lost possession in the Whitehaven half, a sweeping Whitehaven handling movement completed the scoring with yet another try out on the right by ???? Lancaster which McConnell converted to make the final score:
Egremont 12 Whitehaven 35.
