Egremont RUFC Youth

Cockermouth Rugby Tournament for Under 10’s and 12’s
Sunday 25th April 2010

A wet and windy day saw the under 10’s squad play their final games of the season at Cockermouth on Sunday. The competition format certainly shows that it is a squad of players that counts, and not just individuals.
Robert Farrar performed his duties as captain with a maturity beyond his years, always leading the line on the front foot. George Gerry always tried to find the space with quick feet. Thomas Crichton, Lloyd Hunter, James Pringle and Ethan Green took the direct route whenever the opportunity arose.
The opposition certainly knew when they had been hit hard. Joseph Brennan, as always, let his feet and skills do the talking, scoring some good tries through determined running. Jonathon Crichton, fully recovered from illness, was sharp around the break down, winning many balls from the ruck area.
The tackling of Mason Lewthwaite, Matthew Le Jeune and Ben Brock brought significant dividends, with no tries conceded in the 5 games played. Billy Thompson, Daniel Starkie and Cammie Wood all played a role in the attacking play of Egremont, helping to score 21 unanswered tries in the competition.
In the final game of the tournament, the Egremont team played their best rugby of the day, scoring 6 tries, making lots of tackles and clearing up the break down area.

This weekend also saw the under 12s take part in the annual Cockermouth RUFC tournament. The team were keen to continue their unbroken record against other Cumbrian teams for the 2009 / 2010 season. With strong competition from Wigton, Cockermouth, Penrith and Keswick, this was going to require a good team performance. In true fashion, the under 12s put in a great show, running in a total of 15 tries and only conceding one during their suite of 4 games.
Throughout the tournament the team displayed some great junior rugby, with strong srummaging, defence, rucking, ball handling and some great individual runs. The team outclassed the opposition through their swift movement of the ball to the wings and they played some of the finest rugby you will see in the area at under 12s level.
It would not be possible to pick out a single player from the squad of seventeen who did not put in a great individual performance.
The team comprised of - Ciaron Newlands, Fraser McNee, Josh Brennan, Jake Morris, Patrick Brennan, Matthew Armstrong, Robbie Johnson, Luke Howorth, Richard Marr, Kieran Halcrow, Sam Cruden, Ryan Starkie, Patrick Cowman, Keegan Oates, Tom Bold, Jack Thompson, Josh Green.
The under 12s coaches would like to pass on their personal thanks to all of the team for such a strong performance. The team were a great credit to Egremont RUFC. Thanks also go to the parents, supporters and to Cockermouth Youth section for organising a well run and successful tournament.

The Under 9s and Under 12s squad are now looking forward to their final games of the season at the Darlington tournament on Sunday 2nd May. The season will come to a close with the presentation night at 1800 Hrs on Saturday 8th May at the club house, Bleach Green, Egremont.
